Final Essay

Red Bull is an increasing popular energy drink mostly among young adults; older people too. It’s said to give people insane amounts of energy to react faster and increase speed and ability to work out more intently. People even are so dependant on energy drinks that some don’t even have enough energy to get out of bed in the morning or make it through the day without drinking an energy drink. It may be possible Red Bull can provide people with extra energy to work out harder or make it through the day. Bottom line is, they are unhealthy and people are dying from drinking Red Bull, spending hundreds of dollars for no reason, taken in unnecessary calories and causing unpredicted health concerns.
Studies have been held to determine the effects of Sugar-Free Red Bull energy drinks with a high-intensity run time to exhaustion in young adults (Darren Condon, 2009). They found Sugar- Free Red Bull did not affect the high-intensity run time to exhaustion in young adults. People will drink a Red Bull before hitting the gym or doing a high intensity sport, thinking it will improve their energy in order to achieve the results they desire (Darren Condon, 2009). Though like the study above, there are others that prove Red Bull has no real effect on the bodies’ intensity level. Also some studies written on the energy Red Bull does give people, according to Anitei, a science editor, who wrote “Does Red Bull give you wings?” said the sugar in Red Bull does give people energy, only for a short amount of time, then the body crashes and is worst off than it was before. In one can, Red Bull carries the same amount of sugar that the body needs in a day (Stefan Anitei, 2007).
People are actually dying from drinking Red Bull according to the Swedish National Food Administration, who is leading this investigation, they are telling people not to drink Red Bull mixed with alcohol, or after a heavy exercise. Three healthy young adults have died after drinking a Red Bull shortly before their deaths. Two of the victims died after mixing Red Bull with vodka. They were dancing on the dance floor in a local club then just hit the ground; hearts stopped beating, and then became lifeless. The third victim died after drinking multiple cans of the energy drink, then following a heavy work out at the gym. Seems as if there is a pattern to these deaths, the amount of sugar and caffeine in only one can of these drinks are enough to make your heart race; then combined with a stressful work out, lifting weights or dancing will over work your heart and body.
Even without the one can of Red Bull a day, the average American consumes an astounding 2-3 pounds of sugar each week. This is not surprising considering that people take in table sugar, corn sugar, and high- fructose corn syrup; they are all being processed into so many foods, bread, breakfast cereal, mayonnaise, peanut butter, ketchup, spaghetti sauce, and many of the microwaveable meals (Gene, 2001). Makes people think what’s one can going to do, compared to the everyday sugar taken in everyday? Well not only does sugar slow down the immune system, causes diabetes and brings heart disease, it’s even a main cause contributed to a serious problem Americans have called obesity (Gene , 2001)
Sugar and caffeine in energy drinks can also lead to other health compilations such as, anxiety and insomnia (Healing Daily, 2007). When it comes to anxiety and insomnia caffeine has a different affect on everyone. Some people feel completely normal after drinking caffeine at night and others can stay up all night because their nervous system is too stimulated to allow deep, restful and prolonged sleep (Healing Daily, 2007). People who already have problems with anxiety, then drink a lot of caffeine heightens the intensity of the mental activity in the brain can produce unpleasant effects. Red Bull makes people become very jittery and very irritable. When the body feels jittery, hands begin to shake, palpitations and wobbliness of the legs. Over time caffeine can become highly addictive because it make the body believe it has so much energy (Healing Daily, 2007). Then once the false energy is gone, the body and brain is more exhausted than it was in the first place.
Overall, Red Bull is a pointless energy drink that cost too much money just to cause the body to over work itself. With people dying after drinking these energy drinks, having heart conditions, sleeping problems, obesity problems, anxiety and many other problems that have been being discussed, why would anyone want to subject themselves to ruin their body and in some cases life’s just to drink a can of Red Bull? They are doing more bad than good, and the problems they are causing need to come the attention of people.

I did not know that the UK had this type of newest technology. They have generators that are half way covered in water, that create energy. It sames as if they are not advanced then the U.S., only one of the chain generators is 225 million dollars.

"Where I lived, and What I lived for"

"Where I lived, and what I Lived For" by Henry David Thoreau. This essay was a very good essay. Thoreau believes that people live to much in a hurry, "Why should we live with such hurry and waste of life". We do live in a hurry all everyday. I realize that II wake up, get ready, go to work, go to the gym, go home, myspace or facebook, do homework, watch television, then go to sleep. Thoreau talks about living in the woods. I wonder if I could ever leave all the new technology and go back to living how people used to. The essay was a little hard to understand, though I think I can understand his point. We are ruining our world that once used to be beautiful and turning our everyday life's into a waste.

Drinking + Driving.....

People in bars or even that are just drinking alcohol at all are starting to become very into drinking energy drinks and alcohol at the same time and have intentions of driving a motor vehicle. An alcohol feild study was conducted from 802 randonly selected people and interviewed and took survey data. It revealed that people who consumed energy drinks and alcohol were at a 3-fold increased risk of leaving the bars highly intoxicated. This is crazy to think about, people do shots with energy drinks and then feel like that might be ok to drive. They are not only drunk, but now consumed with all the feelings that the energy drink has put into their body.

Red bull COLA? aka COKE?

The new red bull cola came out about a year ago and now officials in Germany worry
that they have found the answer and have found small traces if cocaine in these drinks
they now have prohibited the sale of the "red bull cola" in six states across the country. According to the Health Institute in the state of North Rhine Westphalia
they examined Red Bull Cola and did find traces of coke in it, but not enough to hurt
people who drank it. You would have to drink 12,000 L of Red Bull cola to get a
negative effect from it. To me this is in outrage, unlike the coke scare inside the first cola that was many of years ago. Now we are in 2010 and things like this are still possible to happen in the world? that is just crazy.

High blood pressure?

Researchers found that drinking two cans of red bull everyday can increase your chances of having high blood pressure and heart rate in 15 healthy adults with the average age of 26. While the increases didn’t reach dangerous levels in the healthy volunteers, the increases in blood pressure and heart rate could prove to be clinically significant in patients with heart disease or in those who consume energy drinks often. according to study leader James Kalus. Within four hours of consuming the energy drinks, the participants maximum systolic blood pressure shot up by as much as 9.6 percent, and diastolic blood pressure increased by as much as 7.8 percent. Heart rate also went up by as much 11 percent. It is crazy to think that just drinking something as simple as a energy drink like red bull could do this much stuff to your body. Just reading these articles really makes to think about what I put into my body.

young adults

Drinking red bull before or a big game has become increasingly popular among individuals. The main active ingredient in the sugar-free red bull is caffeine, which has been shown to increase aerobic exercise performance. A study was conducted to determine the effects of sugar-free Red Bull energy drink on high-intensity run time-to-exhaustion in young adults. They found that the sugar- free red bull did not effect the high-intensity run time-to-exhaustion in young adults. This is very instering because one of the reasons why people drink red bull is to get more energy and increase their physical abilities. I found this article on the UAA library website. This source is reliable, i think one of the weaknesses about this article are that they could of went into more detail and explain things a little better.

5-Hour!!

People are saying drinking sugar free energy drinks are better for your body. Is that a possibliy that it could be true? According to David Levitysky ph.D, a professor of nutrition said that you can get the same type of energy from only eating three meals a day. People say 5-hour energy is healty because there is no sugar. Monster is slammed for having 12 teaspoons of sugar, though the caffine is just as bad for you. Bottom line the energy drinks are being marketed as being healthy and safe, only none of them really are. People can do healthy things in their life and still get the same amount of energy.

Wendell Berry-----

All though this essay was very confusing to read, what I think Berry is trying to say is that we as a whole use to much energy as if it were infinite. Berry said "From birth, right now, we are carrying the physical and the moral poisons produced by our crude and ignorant use of this sort of energy" I think Berry is saying that we have been learning from birth how to use energy and it is the wrong way, that we are wasting the energy and abusing our right to use it. I myself do not like this type of writing because I feel like its hard to understand, but overall I think I can understand his point.

EMERGENCY ROOMS????---

Two 18-year old bicycle rides were taken to the emergency room. The first person collapsed for less than a minute. When he awakens, he experienced intense fatigue and weakness as well as nausea, vomiting, headache, and diffused anesthesia. The second patient has the same similarities. Both patient's medical history focused on the substances they had taken to improve performance, they had both confirmed they had consumed different beverages containing caffeine, taurine, and sugar within the last 6 days. Other then they energy drinks they had drink they were perfectly healthy. To me that sound like they had drunk to much caffeine, taurine and sugar. I think their bodies just could not handle it.

Who Wants Some Energy In The Morning??

Here are the active ingredients in Redbull that are responsible for the increased energy.

Glucose - Obviously glucose is Sugar. Cells use sugar and can rapidly convert it into energy. This gives a short term energy boost as glucose is turned into sugar.

Taurine - Taurine is an amino acid that is naturally made in the human body. Each can of Red Bull contains 1000mg of Taurine. Taurine help to move minerals like potassium, sodium, calcium and magnesium throughout the cells. This helps to generate nerve impulses.

Glucuronolactone - Glucuronolactone is a precursor of taurine. It has be known to improve memory and concentration. It also can have stimulant and anti-depressant like effects.

Inositol - Inositol has mood boosting effects and improves how the brain uses serotonin. A chemical that is the same that is boosted by anti-depressant drugs like Prozac and Zoloft.

Niacin - Niacin is a B vitamin that helps in energy formation. It metabolizes energy from fat and carbohydrates. Niacin can help the body use energy by releasing it from food.

D-Pantothenol - D-Pantothenol is also known as vitamin B5, or Pantothenic acid. It is known to improve mood and boost energy. D-Pantothenol help turn fat into energy and increases metabolism.

Pyridoxine HCL - Also known as Vitamin B6, Pyridoxine HCL helps red blood cells to form and provides better oxygen utilization. It also help to break down sugar that you have stored in your body to use for energy.

Vitamin B12 - B12 helps in the formation of red blood cells, for better oxygen utilization. It also help with energy production by breaking down fat and protein.

Caffeine - Red Bull contains 80.0 milligrams of caffeine which is almost double the amount of all other soft drinks. The caffeine in Red Bull gives you energy by blocking a chemical in you brain called adenosine. Adenosine promotes sleepiness and without it you would not be able to fall asleep. When adenosine is blocked you body releases a boost of adrenaline which wakes you up.

Deaths?

There was a death of an Irish student, who had drank three cans of
Red Bull after a strenuous exercise, and three people in Sweden in 2001
They drank red bull combined with alcohol and/or exercise, and died then the product came under scrutiny. People are really dying from over drinking these red bulls. It is so easy to drink these tasty drinks with alcohol, and then over drink and end up in the hospital or much worst dead.

My energy use was 21561 kWh/yr. I am not sure if that is really a lot, but after answering the questions on there, I was not sure what half of the things that are on your house to make it more energy efficient like things to keep the heat in your home for longer. It made me think that maybe my family should look into doing small things like that to save the use of some energy.

Jitteryyyyy-----

Energy drinks are mostly used to get an extra boost during the day, about the same thing as a soda, only energy drinks carry much more caffeine amount other things. Though drinking energy drinks are showing to be more and more unsafe. Energy drinks are generally safe, but like most things, you should drink them in moderation. Because caffeine is a stimulant, consuming a lot of it can lead to heart palpitations, anxiety and insomnia. It also can make you feel very jittery and very irritable. Over time, caffeine can become addictive.People can become addicted to drinking it for the feeling of the energy. It is also a diuretic, it causes the kidneys to remove extra fluid into the urine. That leaves less fluid in the body. so drinking an energy drink while you're exercising can be particularly dangerous. I enjoyed reading this article there was a lot of information to take from it.

Red Bull?

Red Bull is a very popular energy drink. Some people question the side effects that it may cause the people who drink them. The idea is that if something is that good, then there must be something in the ingredient that can bring the opposite reaction. People are worried about the amount of caffeine in a single bottle of this energy drink. Though people do not know that about the same amount of caffeine is in a single cup of coffee that people like to take in.
